Training

Radioskills delivers real practical training and experience in all areas of radio broadcasting in a fast paced working environment, preparing you in everything from production to presentation, newsgathering to technical operations and even charity event organization and fund raising.

You’ll perform a range of tasks essential to the smooth running of the radio station. Courses, coaching and support are delivered to you in addition to relevant work experience. The training experience is a mix of theory and practise, individualized and group training, and the all important ‘hands-on work experience’ in a busy commercial radio station.

All this gives you the best of both worlds - valuable experience to get you into the media business and qualifications to accredit what you have learned!

Training is delivered in two ways - in groups or on an individual basis. Group courses are arranged periodically and are generally delivered in-house at MFR. We use radio broadcast specialists, who are qualified in their subject and have experience in training. Private companies brought in to deliver other courses will generally deliver group training courses.

Some of the training is routinely delivered on a one-to-one basis. Sometimes only the follow-up is on a one-to-one basis. You’ll have the opportunity to access additional training and support essential for high standards and good progress.

We offer a number of different training options. The main training that you’d do with Radioskills would be the Certificate in Radio Broadcasting.

In addition, we provide training in Job Search, Health and Safety in the Workplace and a number of Radio Workshops. These workshops are available to anyone interested in radio in and around the MFR transmission area.

Certificate in Radio Broadcasting - The Qualification

The Certificate in Radio Broadcasting is one of a kind - it’s the only vocationally-based qualification for ‘beginner’ radio presenters in the whole of the UK which uses practical, hands-on work in radio broadcasting to count towards Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) certification.

The Certificate consists of 4 units:

Plan and Prepare for Radio Broadcasting
Record and Edit Sound
Present Radio Broadcasts
Contribute to good working relationships and practices

This qualification could be just the thing for you regardless of your background - if you’re a beginner to radio, have some experience in radio but want more or, if you can do the job but want a qualification, to credit your knowledge and skills.

The Certificate in Radio Broadcasting covers the knowledge and skills needed for a radio broadcaster who will drive and present from a self-operated studio in a radio station.

No two candidates are the same so the process will be different depending on the person; some may understand the theory more than the practice (for example, if you’ve completed a college media course but not driven a desk in a radio station) or you may have lots of hands on experience but haven’t covered all aspects of the underpinning knowledge (many presenters have worked their way up without having formally studied any formal theory). You may need to undertake learning to cover the theory behind the award or just study where there are gaps in their knowledge. Or you may need to learn the practical skills of desk-driving. This can be arranged with the radio station that sponsors you; through books, online material, in-house learning programmes, mentor support or through formal group courses.

The Certificate in Radio Broadcasting is assessed in the workplace so candidates need to be actively involved with a radio station getting lots of experience in the process of ‘making radio’. Candidates need to be able to show that they are competent in a range of activities - from creating new programme ideas through to presenting and all the work skills. When candidates are ready to be assessed, a vocational assessor makes a judgement of the knowledge and skill of the candidate. The certificate is achieved when competency has been shown against all the criteria in the award.

You can start the Certificate when you decide and, along with your key staff, when you’re ready for assessment. Once the certificate has been assessed and verified to the standards agreed with the Scottish Qualifications Authority, you’ll achieve the ‘Certificate in Radio Broadcasting’.

This award is a great one to add to your CV when applying for jobs in radio broadcasting and, as it’s a Vocational Qualification, potential employers will know that you have up-to-date skills to work within a radio station!
